What are phytoestrogens?
Phytoestrogens are natural chemicals found in plants that can behave as though it is estrogen hormone. Estrogen is a hormone responsible for the reproduction system, and is involved in overall female health like bones and heart. Over 280 foods known to have phytoestrogens. And these phytoestrogens food are classified into three chemical categories, the lignans, isoflavonoids, and the coumestans.
Lignan phytoestrogens are found in cereal brans, flaxseeds and beans which are high fiber foods. Isoflavonoid phytoestrogens are found in soybeans as there are from the legume family. Soy products are the main source of this phytoestrogens. Coumestan phytoestrogens are found in varieties of beans such as pinto beans, split peas, and lima beans; clover sprouts and alfalfa are foods that contain highest amounts of coumestans.
Side Effects of Phytoestrogens
It is unknown to whether phytoestrogens can cause breast cancer. Studies have been carried out to look into the breast cancer risk and soybase food but did not find out any effect that soy food can cause breast cancer. However, animal tests have shown that phytoestrogens can reduce the breast cancer risk in rats.
But, the studies were not conclusive but scientifically, soy phytoestrogens have shown behavior like estrogen and may increase breast cancer risk.
Some researchers have indicated that women should be careful when eating big amounts of the soy products or soy foods, because of the possible side effects of soy based phytoestrogens.
How do phytoestrogens work?
Phytoestrogens could work in many different way in the body. Estrogen and phytoestrogens chemical structure are identical and could act as another copy of estrogen. However, phytoestrogens may have other effects not found in estrogen.
Phytoestrogens as copy of estrogen could potentially having same effect as estrogen or totally the reverse effect or blocking estrogen’s effects. it is all depends on the dosage of the food estrogen. Phytoestrogens in high dosage could block body natural estrogen while behave normally when in low dose.
Proteins that is known as estrogen receptors are normally activated by estrogen. Latest test indicated that phytoestrogens can also activate certain members of the estrogen receptors. More studies are needed to confirm how this work and how it may link to the breast cancer risk.
Phytoestrogens being ablet o mimics the characteristic of estrogen may affect production or breakdown of the estrogen by the body and may cause different levels of estrogen in the bloodstream.
On the other hand, if phytoestrogens behave differently could affect the networks between cells thus preventing formation of blood vessels, to tumors or process that can alter the DNA in cell and cell multiplication.
Conclusion
Anything, if you consume too much will bring harm to the body. Concerning to the soy based product and the phytoestrogen level, it has to be taken with precaution as too much of it could endanger your body.
